GenEthics

Charmaine D. Royal, Ph.D. Principal Investigator

Although the GenEthics unit is the newest of the NHGC core areas, there is little doubt that its success will serve as a barometer for measuring the overall success of the Center. Clearly, the ultimate determinant of the NHGC's ability to accomplish its stated goal Is the effectiveness with which it communicates and applies its scientific findings and implications of those findings to the communities it serves, as well as to the broader national and global societies. With the ever-increasing demand for more deliberate attention to the non-scientific impacts of human genome research, particularly for diverse, underrepresented, and traditionally disadvantaged groups, this GenEthics unit faces the tremendous challenge of unraveling both emerging and long-standing ethical and societal issues related not only to human genome research, but also to human relations. It has become increasingly Charmaine D. Royal, Ph.D. evident that without adequate and appropriate integration of the historical context (i.e. social, political, cultural, and economic effects), effort (including human genome research) to eliminate or even reduce the existing health disparities will be futile. Accordingly, major goals of this unit are to identify and address, in context, the implications of human genetics/genome research for African Americans, other African Diaspora populations, and other people of color, as well as to engender a greater appreciation for the genotypic, phenotypic, and cultural diversity of our species.

The GenEthics unit is guided by a Community Advisory Board and comprises three major components - Research, Education/Outreach, and Policy. The interrelationship between these components is demonstrated in the overarching nature of the Research program (it informs both the Education and Policy components) and the dependent characteristic of the Policy component (it is informed by the Research and Education/Outreach components).

The Genethics Unit includes the following staff members:

  • Greer,Tiffney
  • Roach, Allana
  • Robinson-Hill, Valerie
